Helpful facts and suggestions

Here are some facts and a few helpful suggestions for epileptics:

  • Seizures have plagued mankind since the beginning of time.
  • People can rise above the difficulties of their circumstances to become a successful person in their society
  • Know, understand and live within your limitations. (This will vary with each person)
  • Know your seizure triggers. Some common ones are: Inconsistency in taking prescribed medications,lack of proper sleep, stress, heat, fever or food sensitivities.
  • Keep track of occurrences of seizures with a calendar, to determine a pattern or possibly aid in finding a trigger.
  • Have a good dependable support system and avoid being alone or especially traveling alone if your seizures are not well controlled and/or you have no forewarning (aura).
  • If possible, join an organization for emotional support and friendship. Examples would be--a church, epilepsy foundation, or clubs that can provide activities for people with disabilities.
  • Keep your mind alert by doing different activities that stretch your boundaries, but does not stress your mind.
